Jude Bellingham has clarified that his decision to join Real Madrid last year was driven by the enticing "project" that was presented to him and the rich heritage associated with the club.
Despite the interest from Liverpool and Manchester City, it was Madrid who successfully persuaded him to choose them, finalizing a €134m transfer in June.
I engaged in discussions with various teams, however, when Madrid entered the picture, the decision was clear," expressed the English midfielder prior to the upcoming Champions League match against City.
"The magnitude of the club, the vision, the future prospects, the opportunity to play alongside exceptional players - I simply couldn't resist. That's why I opted for it.
"There are numerous aspects I could highlight about the club. I feel appreciative each time I step onto the training ground and proudly wear the badge on my chest."
90min revealed shortly after the 2022 World Cup that Bellingham's personal choices played a crucial role in determining his future. The initial decision he faced was whether to depart Borussia Dortmund in 2023. Madrid, Liverpool, and City all made compelling pitches to him. City was optimistic due to the opportunity to work with Pep Guardiola, who had recently extended his contract until 2025. Meanwhile, Liverpool saw Jurgen Klopp as an attractive factor.
Madrid's appeal was Carlo Ancelotti and his success in developing Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo, Aurelien Tchouameni, and other young talents into top-tier players.
Liverpool eventually withdrew from the race due to Dortmund's high asking price. This left Madrid and City competing for his signature, with Dortmund still hoping to negotiate a new contract with a reasonable release clause to retain him for another season. However, a crucial meeting in early May between Bellingham's father and Madrid's chief scout Juni Calafat ultimately sealed the deal.
